Star Trek: Into Darkness Now On BLU-RAY + DVD

Star Trek: Into Darkness was officially released on Blu-ray / DVD on September 10, 2013. Put to the test, we have a review from a big fan of the movie and genre (the husband) and someone who is not at all familiar with the movie (the wife).

Written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, the film follows the crew of the Enterprise as a shocking act of terror on Earth sends them on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

Star Trek Into Darkness features an outstanding ensemble cast including John Cho, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Peter Weller and Anton Yelchin.

She Said

I was introduced to Star Trek by way of necessity when I got married to a self-professed geek. Star Trek is something that I’ve always heard of and known about, but never really got into. So from the perspective of a loving family member who supports her husband’s Star Trek obsession, here is what I thought of the movie.

What ‘she’ liked (Some Spoiler Alerts):

  • The music. It built up moments of suspense and the theme music was a perfect anthem for the starship Enterprise.
  • The acting. Spock: Whenever I see Zachary Quinto, I always think of Sylar from Heroes – but he did a fantastic job of breaking that association for me. Sulu: John Cho was pretty awesome. I think he’s a great actor and he showed his stuff in this film. Uhura: Zoe Saldana played a wonderful Uhura and I felt she did a great job of covering the funny, passionate, scared, and courageous elements of her character. James Kirk: Chris Pine has those cute boy-next-door good looks and plays a convincing young Captain Kirk. Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Bones (Karl Urban) of course provided an excellent humourous side to the film.
  • New twists and turns in the plot kept cropping up so I definitely paid attention. I did not multi-task while watching this movie on DVD, which I often try to do with other movies. It held my attention and kept me engaged the whole time.
  • Fun lines. One of my favourite was: “Sometimes I want to rip the… bangs off his head”.
  • The appearance of the old Spock. Pretty cool to see old Spock talking to new Spock!
  • The losing-best-friend-on-the-battlefield scene. Even though this kind of scene is really stereotypical, I did feel that Zachary and Chris did a good job of it. I have to admit that I cried. Mostly, I think, because it’s the first time you really see Spock unable to control his emotions.
  • I really thought that the ideas of friendship and loyalty were refreshingly strong in the film.

What ‘she’ could do without:

  • It was a little melodramatic. An exampe is during the scene where James Kirk is negotiating with Khan and says “Let them live!” referring to his crew. Just a tad much.
  • There were so many climaxes – maybe a few too many. Every time something was resolved and I breathed a sigh of relief, I started tensing up because a new problem came up.
  • Each climax was based around some life-or-death situation. SO MANY of them. Seriously, everyone almost died at some point or another. Spock, Uhura, Kirk (numerous times), Bones & Carol Marcus, Scotty, the entire crew of the Enterprise, Khan, etc.
  • Because Kirk almost dies so many times, I felt like I was listening to a lot of sounds of him panting and physically exerting himself. I suppose if you’re in all those situations, you wouldn’t really be able to help it. So I’m not saying Chris Pine did a bad job of Kirk. I just found it a bit annoying.

Overall: She really quite enjoyed it.

He Said

Star_Trek_Into_DarknessI liked Star Trek before it was cool. I watched all of it. ALL of it. So, my review is definitely from a Trekkie’s perspective. Here’s what I thought of the movie (again *SPOILER ALERT*).

 What ‘he’ liked:
  • It’s an overall enjoyable movie – it has a good pace, there are great battles, and amazing visuals.
  • The relationships and personal moments. Spock and Uhura’s relationship, Spock and Kirk’s “bromance”, the epic battle between Spock and Khan fueled by revenge.
  • Alice Eve in her underwear. What can I say? I’m a guy.

What ‘he’ could do without:

  • Simon Pegg’s Scotty – I feel the character was somewhat disconnected between being a super genius, chief engineer, theoretical physicist, and booze hound.
  • Carol Marcus – did she really fit into the movie? How do you connect the microbiologist to the weapons specialist science officer? There are some definite issues with continuity here.
  • The noble intent to mirror Wrath of Khan started getting overly predictable. As he says, “Whatever the original Kirk said, new Spock would repeat.” Hardcore fans might have a problem with this.
  • The Leonard Nimoy cameo felt out of place. The first movie already showed the old Spock stating that he would not interfere with the new timeline. Are we going to keep seeing cameos of old Spock, handholding new Spock through every difficult situation?

Overall: Being a fan of the show and the genre, he enjoyed the movie.
Special features on Blu-ray/DVD Combo include:

  • Red Planet
  • Conference Room
  • Kronos
  • Villians
  • Ship to Ship
  • Climax
  • Mission Continues

Star Trek Into Darkness is now available where DVD and Blu-rays are sold across Canada and is rated PG-13.

Funny, I just finished watching it. I love Star Trek. The only corny part was when Spock said “KHANNNNNNNNNNNN!!!”

Debbie – that moment definitely fell under “a tad melodramatic”!!

Loved this isn’t “the old Star Trek” but it can’t be. Why bother trying to make something exactly the same. It appeals to a new generation, is definitely more of an action movie, but that can be a good thing. What they did, they did well!

  • Carolyn September 25, 2013, 3:08 pm

loved it – saw it at an advanced screening – had so much fun – would see it again, and again :)
