Do you feel it? The mornings are colder, the evenings get dark earlier and thoughts of planting and growing turn to harvesting and preparing for the cold winter to come.
I love this time of year. Not because of ‘back-to-school’, our girls are not old enough for that yet, but because fall time for me means ‘doing’ less and ‘enjoying’ more.
Because of the hot weather near the end of our summer, our grass is not growing as fast and our weeds are not winning the territorial war that has been waging all summer. All that is left is to sit back and savour the vegetables and fruit that has been growing in the garden.
My favorite fall foods are tomatoes, potatoes, onions, corn and apples. Right now is the perfect time to enjoy all of them, fresh from the garden.
My favorite memory of food in the fall has to be my mom’s apple pie. I’m not sure where she got the original recipe from (note to my mom: feel free to let me know in my comments section where you got it) but it is amazing. I remember her peeling apple after apple when I was a child. She would make them in batches and freeze some. As an adult, I’m sure I could eat a whole pie by myself.
I don’t know if my husband has noticed in our six years of being married, but I don’t eat apples much during the summer months. I love apples and since apples are one of the few fruits that are available during the long winter months, I purposely take a break from them over the summer so that I can enjoy them all over again in the fall.
Apples are also a wonderful fruit to cook with and mainly make warm, sweet dishes that are perfect for autumn when the leaves start falling. If you are looking for some easy recipes that include apples, make sure you check out LifeMadeDelicious.ca. While you are there, check out the offers tab, there are always coupons available there. Right now there is a Bisquick coupon, but I hear that both a Honey Nut Cheerios coupon and a really nice Old El Paso one will be coming soon… Mexican night anyone???
