In one week, children across the country will begin heading back to school. The parks and malls will be less busy, the morning traffic will pick up and new family routines will develop. Parents are trying to hold on to their sanity for one more week and kids are taking what little time they have left to enjoy their time at home.

There are new clothes, food for lunches, school supplies and accessories. This year, show your kids that they can do their part to protect our environment by using a waste-free lunch system. Gone are the days of disposable containers and sandwich wraps. Our dumps are filling up too quickly.

The idea behind a waste-free lunch is that nothing from the lunch goes into the trash at school (well, maybe the tuna sandwich, but that is a different post). Your child uses a reusable lunch bag, takes utensils, a water bottle or container for liquids, and reusable and cleanable sandwich/snack bags and (wait for it) cloth napkins. If containers are needed, use glass or stainless steel and bring everything home to clean and use again the next day. Your child eats their food, and nothing from your child’s lunch goes in to the school trash during lunch hour. Can you imagine how great that would be for the environment if every child in the school did that? What about in the city or across the country?

When kids learn a habit when they are young, it becomes second nature and Lavish & Lime has a full line of waste-free lunch items and accessories to help you get started. I was sent a Cotton Canvas Insulated Lunch Bag in the Owl Design to review. The designs in the line that I was sent are fun and fresh, and the material is durable and strong. The line pays really close attention to detail. There is a pocket on the front of the lunch bag that covers half of the design. The owl design carries on both on top of the bag and under the pocket as seen in this image below.

The inside of the bag is insulated to keep foods at a cool temperature for longer, and there is an added mesh pocket inside to store straws, cutlery and napkins. I like the mesh idea on the inside so food crumbs don’t get stuck in the bag. Also on the inside of the bag is a place to put your contact information in case it is lost. There is a name, address and email field. This is handy in case you don’t want to put your child’s home address on anything for security reasons.

This lunch bag also has a lot of room in it. There is enough to store a water bottle, and a good sized lunch with snacks. Now, I will never send my child off to school with pop (let alone four cans of it, those are her father’s), but I wanted to give you an idea of what this lunch bag can hold. I was easily able to fit four cans in the bag and you will notice that there is still some room on the sides, plus there is room above the cans still. I also stood one can up so you can see that it holds quite a lot.
