SpongeBob Digital Underwater Camera & Case – Review & Giveaway (Closed)

Is your child at that age where they constantly want to hold your camera and take their own pictures? Are you a little nervous to let them have it? If your child has discovered how much fun taking pictures can be and has expressed interest in taking their own, it might be a good time to consider buying them their first camera.

Sakar has a number of kids cameras that would be perfect for your kid’s first camera and among them is the SpongeBob Digital Underwater Camera and Case.

The camera retails for $29.99 at Toys R Us.com and to me, it’s a good price for a starting kids camera. If Baby Bird goes out and destroys it by accident, I am not out a lot of money.

The hard plastic carrying case is what makes it waterproof. Once the camera is securely in place, then it can be used underwater up to a depth of 30′. With our cold weather we haven’t been able to try out this feature yet, but I did stick it in a sink filled with water to test out it’s water resistance, and I can tell you that it is waterproof as far as my sink is concerned.

I also recommend keeping the camera in the case regardless as it acts as great protection in case the camera is dropped.

The camera can take up to 152 digital pictures at a time. The pictures will stay in the cameras memory until the batteries die or until you take them off the camera and load them on to your computer. So, if you want to keep the pictures your child has taken, I recommend that you get in the practice of downloading them to your computer every once in a while. Once the batteries die, the images are lost.

When reviewing the image quality, I had to remind myself that it is meant as a child’s camera. If you want your child to be the next Anne Geddes or Ansel Adams and be able to take crystal clear pictures, then you should be giving your own camera to them.

I look at a first camera as a test and practice item of sorts. First, I want to see if my child will listen and treat the camera as something more than a toy. And for them, I want them to be able to practice ‘point and shoot’ and to get a feel for if they like having a camera.

That being said, here are some of the pictures Baby Bird and I took while trying out her first camera.

There is a plastic guide you can flip up if you don’t want to look through the viewer to take the shot. I didn’t realize it, but I was looking through the guide and thought I was centered on Baby Bird’s face, but since I had the camera angled down, I cut off some of her head. My fault, not the cameras!

These shots were taken inside on a really sunny bright day.

And finally, these two were taken last night indoors around 8:30pm. We were just goofing around before bedtime and I decided to take a couple of pictures.

The camera also comes with a USB cable and a disc that works on both PCs and Macs and allows you to download your photos. With the same software, you can also organize and email your pictures, put together a story complete with stickers and frames and play some games with SpongeBob.

I remember my first camera and I have to say that for $29.99, this is a good first camera. The pictures are grainy and bright depending on the lighting, but I think for a first camera, it does the trick.

Your kids can spend hours exploring, taking pictures and downloading them then getting back out there and doing it all over again. And from a kids perspective, they don’t care if the images are high quality, what they care about is that they were given the responsibility of using it themselves. Baby Bird runs around the house holding it, with a big grin on her face and says “CHEEE” then holds it up to her head. She just likes that she gets to use it without a parent hovering nearby to take it away.
