Lost and Found

I have been trying like crazy to recreate my grandmother’s Chicken and Dumplings recipe. My grandma hasn’t made the recipe in years due to arthritis and just getting older and I was told that the recipe was never written down. I thought I had written it down once when I was 19 or so, but have either lost the recipe, or just imagined that I had written it down – wishful thinking maybe.

Many of you know I entered the recipe I made up in to a baking challenge, but even that recipe wasn’t quite right. It was missing something. It was missing my grandma’s touch. That special combination of ingredients that takes me back to when I was a child.

The days we would visit my grandma, when we would go swimming, help her with puzzles and of course when we sat down to a wonderful lunch and got to spend time around the table laughing and talking.

Fast forward to now — We have been packing on all of our days off over the past few weeks. A couple of weekends ago (the day before my birthday to be exact) I found something that I wasn’t so sure ever really existed in the first place.

My grandma’s Chicken and Dumpling recipe!

There it was, on the first few pages of an old palm-sized notebook at the bottom of a box. The handwriting of a 19 year old – a VERY SMART 19 year old! I wrote the freakin’ recipe down!

It is quite different than what I had submitted to the contest and I can’t wait to make it. I also have the instructions for the home-made dumplings. Once I try it out to make sure it’s good, I will share it in both it’s full version and I will make it into a slow cooker version.

I am actually quite excited that it is different than the recipe I submitted, because now I can post it as our own family favorite recipe with recipe credits to my grandma.

  1. I love finding old receipes and trying the out. I cherish the ones written in my mom's handwriting (she passed away when I was 15 and was an amazing cook). Happy cooking!

I knew you would find that recipe, it just took a big move to do it. Your recipe you submitted to the baking challenge was very close to Grandma's recipe, except for the home made dumplings. Both recipes are excellant. Can't wait to see you all in a couple of weeks.

    Love Mom
