One of my favorite quotes when I think about blogging/writing and what it means to me is “Better to write for yourself and have no public than to write for the public and have no self” by Cyril Connolly.
Lately I have been thinking about what I want from my site — and I think it’s time to announce a change is coming.
I started blogging way back in 2005 actually. If you go back as far as you can on this site though you will see that 2009 is as far as it goes.
There was is another site out there. One that I have neglected, one that is hidden. Not out of shame or anything cool like that, but because I am a protective mom. It is our family website that chronicled our move out here from a couple of provinces over. One that we used to keep friends and family updated. When Baby Bird came along, the ‘mama bear’ instinct took over and we felt we needed to make it private. Just too much identifiable information on there.
Out of this need for privacy, plus my need to reach out to people and do what I do best (talk), This Bird’s Day was born. I mean if you look hard enough (*cough* Twitter), you can find out my name – I don’t care about that. It is important that my daughter’s name remain private until she is old enough to choose if she wants to be identified here. So far, she is ‘un-Google-able’ by name and it is not my decision to make.
I digress, back to topic (if there is one).
I first started this site to show Canadians that there are a lot of options, tips and avenues available to them if they really want to save some money. I wanted to maintain lists of other sites where you can get coupons or freebies from right here in Canada. And I wanted to make friends and chat with smart, frugal-savvy Canucks like you.
So far I have met wonderful readers, friends, companies, PR reps — the list goes on. I have the chance to talk about new products, to review products, and to share with you some products that have really made a difference in our lives.
Wow – that sounds almost like I’m saying goodbye doesn’t it? I’m not. You’re still stuck with me.
I love sharing what I know about saving money and I love spreading the word about new or exciting products. I enjoy checking my comments or opening up my email and hearing from someone who is benefiting from my tips for saving money. I am a TV and movie junkie and our family loves music. My reviews and giveaways are also staying.
The change I am writing about is more of an addition. There are other pieces of my puzzle I want to share. And hopefully in all of this we will all take something away from this site.
I have some craft and DIY projects coming up that I want to share. I will be gardening this year and it is my goal to try composting. I want to make more eco-friendly choices…and other thoughts that are floating around in my head that I need to get out.
Seriously, I need to get a tape recorder for those middle of the night post idea epiphanies that come out of nowhere at 4:00am. Those ones that I think are so great, only to forget them a few hours later when I wake up…
Anyway, that’s my semi-announcement. I know — nothing earth shattering. It sounded better at four o’clock this morning!

Yay for crafts and DIY!
That sounds great!! I look forward to reading more!!
I enjoy reading your blog and I am glad you are not leaving us. :)
Looking forward to reading what you have to share!
Sounds exciting, Sheri! I'm glad you're not saying goodbye to us.
EVERYTHING sounds better at four in the morning :) I myself find that I am struggling with the direction that I want my blog to take and as a result I don't post nearly often enough! I also have our family blog private as I feel that there is no reason anyone outside of close family and friends needs to see what we are up to and see pics of the kids.
sounds great sheri – i always enjoy your blog!
